Unity Educational Services proposes a six-week weekend Water Education Academy designed to help students develop a deeper understanding of the value of water, establish positive water-use habits, understand water, wastewater and recycled-water systems, and discover career opportunities within the water industry. The program will incorporate age-appropriate educational materials and learning concepts available through Eastern Municipal Water District's Education Program.
This structure tracks well with EMWD's actual education pathway. EMWD says its education program covers 2nd–12th grade through college and water-career preparation, and provides schools in its service area with lesson plans, curriculum packets and student materials.
EMWD Its current field-trip program also gives Grades 3–12 opportunities to learn about wastewater and recycled water, while Grades 6–12 have additional filtration/desalination experiences.
For Grades 10–12, the curriculum can go substantially deeper. EMWD's Environmental Water Resource CTE program includes careers, the urban water cycle, imported and groundwater, distribution, filtration, water quality/testing, wastewater treatment, job shadowing and a capstone project.
EMWD states that this high school curriculum meets Common Core, NGSS and CTE standards.
